Victim: Jeffrey D. Smith
Suspect: Paul S. Smith
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad in investigating the death of Jeffrey Smith. On 07-03-2010 at approximately 11:33pm, deputies responded to Smitty’s Garage, 205 Hwy A in Hawk Point, for a report of an assault. When they arrived on scene, they found Jeffrey “Smitty” Smith (age 49) on the ground in the parking lot of his mechanic’s shop. Jeffrey was airlifted to a hospital where he died from a gunshot wound.
Investigators believe Jeffrey interrupted a burglary in progress to his mechanic’s shop at which time he was shot.
Paul Smith (age 38), no relation to Jeffrey Smith, is believed to be the suspect in this case. As investigators arrived at Paul’s residence to speak with him, Paul pulled out a gun and committed suicide.
During a subsequent search of Paul’s residence, a gun was located that was believed to be used to shoot Jeffrey. Ballistics examination of the gun revealed a match to the shell casing and projectile recovered at the scene of Jeffrey’s murder.
