The Des Peres Police Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad in investigating the death of Joyce Belrose. At around 3:00pm, police officers responded to West County Mall (80 West County Center) for a report of a possible gunshot victim. There they located Joyce Belrose (age 57) lying next to her Chevrolet Trailblazer in the mall parking lot. She had been shot. She was transported to the hospital where she died.
With the assistance of this investigation that was continued by the Des Peres Police Department, Derrick Luster (age 23 at the time of the murder) was charged 7 years later after DNA evidence linked him to the scene. He was arrested in 2007 on charges of Murder 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action. His bond was set at $1,000,000.
