The Lake St. Louis Police Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad in investigating the death of Nancy Hutchings. At approximately 3:41pm, police officers responded to a residence on Lakeside Circle for a report of a person down and injured. There they located Nancy Hutchings (age 53) inside her home. She had massive head trauma and was pronounced dead on scene.

As a result of this investigation, Raymond Marciniak Jr (age 20) was charged with Murder 2nd Degree, Robbery 1st Degree, Tampering with Motor Vehicle 1st Degree, and Armed Criminal Action. His bond was set at $500,000.
