The Granite City Police Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad in investigating the death of Sheila Hunt (age 32). At approximately 2:42am, police officers responded to a residence in the 2100 block of Bryan Avenue for a report of a residential house fire. After the fire was extinguished, the body of Sheila Hunt was located inside the residence. It was determined she had been strangled and the fire to the residence had been intentionally set.

With the assistance of this investigation that was continued by the Granite City Police Department, Mark McGuire (age 26 at the time of Sheila’s death) was charged 6 years later in 1995 with 1st Degree Murder, Aggravated Criminal Sexual Assault, and Arson. He was arrested on a no-bond warrant.
