The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad in investigating the death of Edward Schneeberger (age 36). At approximately 11:54pm, deputies responded to John's Falling Springs Tavern (Route 1, near Dupo) for a report of a shooting. There they located Edward Schneeberger lying in the parking lot. He had been shot and was transported to the hospital where he died early the next morning.

As a result of this investigation, Gary Hayes (age 37) was charged with 1st Degree Murder and Involuntary Manslaughter in Edward’s death. Gary’s bond was set at $75,000.
