The Madison City Police Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad in investigating the deaths of Hugh Stuart (age 84), Bertie Stuart (age 80), and Ruth Ann Rapoff (age 49). At approximately 7:33pm, police officers responded to a residence in the 1600 block of 3rd Street for a report of three bodies located inside the residence. There they located Hugh Stuart, his wife Bertie Stuart, and their daughter Ruth Ann Rapoff inside the residence after they had been discovered by a family member. They had all been shot and were pronounced dead on scene.

After a thorough investigation, it was determined Hugh Stuart shot and killed his wife, Bertie Stuart, and daughter, Ruth Ann Rapoff, before shooting and killing himself.
