Suspect: James Howard Williams Sr and Joann Marie Notheis

The St. Charles County Sheriff’s Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad in investigating the disappearance and murder of Walter Notheis Jr (age 40) who was also known by the stage name Walter Scott. Walter was the lead singer for the 1960s band Bob Kuban and The In-Men.

On 12/28/1983 at approximately 7:29am, deputies responded to a residence on Pershing Lake Drive for a report of a missing person. Walter was reported missing since the previous evening on 12/27/1983. Walter remained listed as a missing person until his body was found 04/10/1987 in a cistern on property that had been owned by James Williams Sr. Walter had been bound with a rope and shot in the back.

As a result of this investigation, Walter’s wife, Joann Notheis, and Joann’s boyfriend, James Williams Sr (age 44 at the time of Walter’s murder), were both charged with Capital Murder in Walter’s death.
