The Ferguson Police Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad in investigating the death of Joe Smith (age 22). At approximately 6:30am, a police officer on routine patrol responded to a drainage ditch in the 900 block of Ferguson Avenue when he heard a car horn repeatedly honking. There the officer made contact with a city worker who had found a body lying in the drainage ditch. The officer found Joe Smith lying in the drainage ditch. He had been shot and was pronounced dead on scene.
