The Pine Lawn Police Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad in investigating the deaths of Oscar Green Sr (age 40), his wife Shirley Green (age 37), and their daughter Arlene Green (age 18). At approximately 1:00pm, police officers responded to Ruth's Food Shop (6508 Pasadena Boulevard), which was owned by Oscar Green Sr and Shirley Green, for a report of suspicious activity. It was reported Ruth’s Food Shop was found to have the door chained shut from the inside.
When officers made entry into the store, they located Oscar Sr, Shirley, and Arlene Green inside the store. They had all been shot. Oscar Sr and Shirley were pronounced dead on scene. Arlene was transported to the hospital where she died a short time later.
As a result of this investigation, Jerome Downs (age 20) and Angelo Hughes (age 18) were each charged with three counts of Capital Murder.
