The Granite City Police Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad in investigating the death of Charles Weiss. At around 9:23pm, police officers were called to the 1200 block of Meridian Avenue for a report of shots fired and a man down. There they found Charles Weiss (age 54) lying in a yard. He had been shot in the chest. Before he died, he was able say he had been robbed. He was transported to a local hospital where he died.
As a result of this investigation, Shawn Russell (age 15), Brian Taylor (age 16), Markeith Reynolds (age 15), and Mylan Newbern (age 14) were charged with 1st Degree Murder. All the juveniles were charged as adults.
Mylan Newbern was additionally charged with Attempted Armed Robbery and Residential Burglary.
