The Wood River Police Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad in investigating the death of Rachel Hayes. Police officers responded to the 1300 block of Virginia Street for a 911 call of shots being fired and a person may have been shot. There they located Rachel Hayes (age 21) deceased inside the residence. She had been stabbed to death.
As a result of this investigation, Matthew Davis (age 24) was charged with 1st Degree Murder, Aggravated Criminal Sexual Assault , and Residential Burglary.
