The Madison County Sheriff’s Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad in investigating the death of Selma Ducanovic. At approximately 7:10pm, deputies responded to the Granite City Nameoki Rain Water Canal Ditch at the location where it empties into Horseshoe Lake for a report of a body in the water, Two fishermen had located the body of Selma Ducanovic (age 11) partially submerged in the water.
During the course of this investigation, it was determined David Martin had gone to Selma’s residence in St. Louis, MO and lured her out by telling her the residence was on fire. He then drove her to Horseshoe Lake State Park and shot her in the back of the head.
At the time of Selma’s death, David Martin was a suspect in four separate incidents against Bosnians in St Louis, MO. Selma was a Bosnian immigrant.
As a result of this investigation, David Martin (age 31) was charged with 1st Degree Murder and Aggravated Kidnapping. He was arrested on a no-bond warrant.
