The Granite City Police Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad in investigating the attempted murder of Anthony Cammack. Police officers responded to an empty lot behind 2052 Edison Avenue for a report of person lying on their back covered in blood. When police arrived, they located Anthony Cammack on the ground. He was unconscious, covered in blood, and had a severe laceration to his head. There was a large piece of concrete lying about four feet from his body which had blood and hair on it. Cammack survived his injuries at the time but died approximately 10 years later in a nursing home from his injuries. He had been in a vegetative state until his death and never recovered.
As a result of this investigation, the following individuals were each charged in 1995 with Attempted 1st Degree Murder:
Erskine Thomson (age 17) - Bond $500,000
William Smith (age 19) - Bond $500,000
Perrie Gibson (age 15 - charged as an adult) - Bond $100,000
