The Bel-Nor Police Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad in investigating the kidnapping of a 57 year-old woman and her 9 year-old granddaughter. At approximately 11:50pm, the grandmother and granddaughter were driving home from a shopping trip when their vehicle was struck from behind by another vehicle in the area of Hillsdale Drive and Normandy Avenue. When the grandmother exited her vehicle to examine the damage, she was assaulted and pushed back into her car by the driver from the vehicle that struck hers. The suspect got into the driver’s seat of the victims’ car.
As the suspect took off with both victims in the car, the grandmother fought with the suspect and opened the door in an attempt for her and her granddaughter to jump from the car and escape. However, the suspect turned the car sharply throwing the grandmother from the car. The suspect drove off with the granddaughter in the car. The grandmother was able to flag down a passing police car for help.
The following morning at approximately 5:45am, the 9 year-old girl was located in the area of 7th Street and Summit Avenue in East St. Louis, IL. She had not been injured.
Since the kidnapping went across state lines, the case was turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) for investigation.
