The Wellston Police Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad in investigating the death of Roosevelt Mixon (age 39). At approximately 1:25am, police officers responded to a residence in the 6300 block of Audrey Avenue for a report of a burglary in progress with the suspect still inside the residence. When officers arrived on scene, the suspect had already fled the residence. There they located Roosevelt Mixon inside the residence where he had been shot. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on scene. There were two additional individuals hiding inside the residence, but they had not been injured.
As a result of this investigation, a 38 year-old man was charged with Murder 1st Degree, Armed Criminal Action, and Burglary 1st Degree. His bond was set at $250,000. He was convicted by a jury on all charges and sentenced to life in prison without parole. After several years of failed appeals, in 1997 the Missouri Court of Appeals reversed his conviction.
