The Alton Police Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad investigating the death of Derrance Taylor. At approximately 4:13am, multiple Alton police officers were on foot in the area of the 1000 block of East 7th Street when they heard multiple gun shots. They quickly responded to the area of the gunshots and found Derrance Taylor lying face down in the 900 block of Union Street.

As a result of the investigation, Cameron Matlock was charged with First Degree Murder (3 counts), Armed Robbery (1 count), and Unlawful Possession of Weapon by a Felon (1 count). His bond was set at $1,000,000.00.
