The Maplewood Police Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad in investigating the deaths of Det. John Gallino (age 36) and John Hagerty (age 39). At approximately 1:26am, police officers responded to Cousin Hugo's Tavern (3233 Laclede Station Road) for a report of a robbery in progress with a shooting. There they located off-duty police detective John Gallino and customer John Hagerty inside the bar. Detective Gallino had been shot and was pronounced dead on scene. John Hagerty had been stabbed and was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

During the investigation, it was learned several armed men entered the tavern and ordered all of the patrons to lay on the floor. One of the customers suffered serious gunshot injuries and an employee suffered a serious stab wound. Both of those victims survived their injuries. A dog was also cut during the robbery but survived.
